The SOUL of Best Foot Forward

Fear.  We all have it.  Whether it’s in response to a real threat, or the unknown, there are always two choices: fight or flight.  Which do you choose when you dig deep into your soul? Do you have what it takes it overcome it, and to experience what is beyond the imaginary threshold that serves as an obstacle for many of us, especially when fear is really about making a change that could lead to true happiness?  It’s the very word “could” that gives us pause.  It “could” make us happy.  But it “could” not.  Is your “why,” your desire, bigger than the fear, the doubt?

My passion project, my business, Best Foot Forward, was about making the “why” bigger than the fear.  When push came to shove, I finally dug as deep as I could in my soul and asked myself THE question:  what if I failed? What would that really mean to me?  When I finally allowed myself to be completely honest, and cleared all of the noise out of my head and allowed my inner voice to reign, the answer was simple.  The answer was: what if I don’t? Typical lawyer in me to answer a question with a question — but this answer was my way of reminding myself of the obvious.  How can I truly fail when I am doing something I love?

This year, 2014, for some indefinable reason, felt like the start of the next phase for me.  Suddenly, in the last few years, when I finally opened myself up to a world from which I derived such joy, I found life in a way I never before experienced it.  This year, I’m wanted to share that opportunity with my clients, friends, business contacts to kick-start their year and their new beginnings as much as I wanted to mine.

My branding image is a quintessential black pump.  It symbolizes strength, power, pointedness, sophistication,  elegance, confidence – its my message to the outside world about how I feel inside when I wear them and how I perceive myself.  But a shoe is only as good as the sole that holds it together.   Indeed, the key to any great shoe is the sole. It has to be durable, withstand the test of time, and serve as a backbone.  So does your soul.  Homonyms, it is true; but is it a coincidence?  I think not.  Our feet, and the shoes we don to take us on the journeys in our lives have it be all of those things and more.  To me, when presented with the opportunity to jump start 2014 and my mind, body, style and soul, SOULCYCLE was the place to do it.  The kickoff to my year–personally and professionally– needed to start there. So, I made it happen — with a little help from my friends at SoulCycle.

Off we were for a ride at SoulCycle at Larkspur Landing.  Last night, 30 of my BFF’ers, my “besties” led by our fearless leader, Sam, rode to find what lay deep in our SOULs, whether figurative for most, or quite literally for me.  Paying homage to spinning roots, SoulCycle is more of a religion for its most loyal of followers — if you let yourself go there.  There is something spiritual about pushing yourself to the limit– or so far that you feel like your heart will burst out of your chest.  If you take yourself physically to the edge, your mind, your inner being, your soul, kind of goes there too.  With the music literally penetrating you, and your legs moving in the pattern that resembles the essence of life itself – a circle- I could not help but go there.  I dug deep not just because I had to, in order to get through the set, I did it because I finally let go enough to let myself go there.  And from that comes inner strength, release, peace, and yes, something soulful for me. After our ride, I offered my “besties” a piece of my soul:  I shared my sincere gratitude for their support in helping me make my why greater than my fear, so that my life could have deeper meaning– and so that I could reclaim a part of my soul that succumbed to my previous professional experience.  It is amazing the joy that comes with being vulnerable, honest and Soulful — and if you have to spin your wheels for a while to get there, you will– and it will be worth the ride. I can guarantee that.
